SALT LAKE CITY Already with a plethora of guards and needing a larger inside presence, the Warriors signed forward Jermareo Davidson to a 10-day contract from the Developmental League on Wednesday and waived DeMarcus Nelson, their opening night starter at point guard.
Davidson heard from the Warriors on Saturday and arrived here Sunday night. He signed Monday, the first day NBA teams could sign players to 10-day contracts. "We're going to take a look at him and see if we like him. And if we don't, we'll move on and try somebody else," said Warriors coach Don Nelson, who saw Davidson play in the summer league. "We have plenty of guards, and we really need more of an up-front player."
Davidson, who's 6-foot-10 and 230 pounds, was drafted by the Warriors in 2007 and traded to Charlotte with Jason Richardson the same day for the rights to forward Brandan Wright, who was the Bobcats' first round pick that summer.
Davidson played in 38 games for the Bobcats last season, averaging 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds, and was waived Oct. 27. Nelson said Davidson can run and shoot the jumper a little better than rookie forward Richard Hendrix, the Warriors' second-round draft pick who was waived by the team last month.
Davidson, who averaged 16.1 points and 10.8 rebounds in 15 games with the Idaho Stampede, said he learned to "approach everything in a professional way" while in Charlotte. "I won't make the same mistakes. Just have a whole different approach."
Nelson, an undrafted free agent signed by Golden State in September, played in 13 games for the Warriors and started their first five games before being sent to the Bakersfield Jam in mid-November.
Nelson was recalled from Bakersfield in mid-December and played five more games but had not seen action in the past three games. Overall, he averaged 13.1 minutes, 4.1 points and 1.0 assist.
"He was my favorite player. I loved him, I wish him well, and I'm trying to help him get another job or another chance to show what he can do," Don Nelson said. "But with us right now, we need a different position."
All contracts become guaranteed for the remainder of the season this Saturday. Three other Warriors, point guard C.J. Watson, forward Rob Kurz and swingman Anthony Morrow, are not playing with guaranteed contracts, but Nelson has liked what he has seen from all three players and said they are in no danger of being let go. After Friday's loss to Minnesota, Nelson said Kurz and Morrow were his two best players that night.
When asked if this transaction might light a fire under forward Anthony Randolph, who does many of the same things as Davidson, Nelson said Randolph has looked good in the team's last two practices. After Friday's loss, Nelson said he would be sitting Randolph, the team's 2008 first-round pick, indefinitely.
