Charlotte Bobcats Getting Inside 2009-09-18

Charlotte Bobcats Getting Inside 2009-09-18Raymond Felton loves to play basketball, with or without a contract.

Felton played in the North Carolina alumni game earlier this month and is participating in pick-up games at the Bobcats' training facility. His has yet to work out a long-term contract with the Bobcats, meaning he might yet have to sign the one-year qualifying offer of $5.5 million that would make him an unrestricted free agent the summer of 2010.

With all that at stake, Felton still takes the calculated injury risk this summer of playing. That's not a big surprise; he always plays, even when coaches advise him to ease back.

That's what former Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff did once, telling Felton there was no reason for him to play in summer-league games in Orlando. Felton lobbied so hard to play that Bickerstaff relented, saying if he didn't use Felton in that controlled circumstance, Felton would just go searching for a pick-up game somewhere.

That love of the game and commitment to improve is what coach Larry Brown respects so much about Felton. And why Brown so wants Felton back as a Bobcat.
