The Bobcats hope the 6-foot-11 Jones can help with rebounding and bolster a thin frontcourt. The move comes after the Bobcats waived forwards Andre Brown and Linton Johnson last week.
Jones has played in 74 games over three seasons with Boston and Cleveland, averaging 1.3 points and 2.4 rebounds. The former Saint Joseph's big man began this season playing in Turkey.
Jones arrived in Charlotte on Monday, signed his contract and was expected to be on the bench for the Bobcats' game with Philadelphia.
The Bobcats have 14 players on their roster, still one shy of the maximum allowed.
