Bobcats-Mavericks Preview
The Dallas Mavericks delivered an outstanding offensive performance in their last game, but still ended up losing in double-overtime to a long-time nemesis.

They could have more luck against a struggling team that just traded its leading scorer.

The Mavericks look to bounce back from their second loss in 11 games Thursday night when they host the Charlotte Bobcats, who traded Jason Richardson on Wednesday.

Dallas (11-9) had won nine of 10 games before falling 133-126 to Southwest Division rival San Antonio in double-overtime Tuesday night.

The Mavericks scored at least 100 points for the seventh straight game, had 28 assists on 48 field goals, shot 51.6 percent from the floor and made nine of their 24 3-point attempts, but couldn't stop the Spurs, who had 17 points in the second overtime.

"It's tough, especially the way we have been playing," said Mavericks point guard Jason Kidd, who had 24 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists while shooting 10-for-15. "If we play like we did tonight, we can win a lot of games."

The Mavericks have a new reason to be confident heading into Thursday's game because the Bobcats (7-15) will be playing their second game without Richardson, who was dealt to Phoenix shortly before Wednesday night's contest.

The 6-foot-6 Richardson is a two-time NBA slam dunk champion who led the league with 243 3-pointers last season. He was averaging a team-high 18.7 points in 14 games with Charlotte.

"When you try to get better, you're going to lose some assets," Bobcats coach Larry Brown said. "We're losing a pretty darn good player and the way Phoenix is trying to make their team, they just added an unbelievable piece."

Without its starting shooting guard, Charlotte fell 105-89 to New Orleans on Wednesday.

"It was like the varsity and the JV," Brown said. "If it wasn't for (Hornets coach Byron Scott) being so gracious substituting like he did, I don't know what (the score) would have been. We were short-handed."

The Bobcats received Raja Bell, Boris Diaw and rookie Sean Singletary in Wednesday's deal, while also sending Jared Dudley and a 2010 second-round draft pick to the Suns.

Bell, a first-team all-defensive team selection in 2006-07 and second team last season, is averaging 9.6 points - his lowest since 2002-03 - despite shooting a career-high 46.8 percent from 3-point range.

The versatile Diaw is averaging 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 56.7 percent from the field. Singletary appeared in only 13 games, averaging 2.6 points.

It's unclear if Charlotte's new acquisitions will be available Thursday, when the team tries to avoid its fifth straight loss.

"I think it's going to be a little bit of a shock to those guys when you start a season and you have a legitimate chance to win a championship and all of a sudden go with a team that's trying to go and find an identity and get better," Brown said.

The Bobcats have a long way to go if their first meeting with the Mavericks is any indication. They were outscored 28-10 in the first quarter and shot 38.8 percent from the field in a 100-83 home defeat Nov. 18.

Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki had 32 points and nine rebounds against Charlotte, one of his seven games with at least 30 points this season.

Rookie guard D.J. Augustin led Charlotte with 21 points and went 9-for-15 from the field against the Mavericks. This will be Augustin's first pro game back in Texas, where he was a star with the University of Texas for two seasons before becoming the ninth overall pick in June's draft.

Augustin made his fourth start of the season Wednesday and scored a career-high 28 points.
